Gilwell 24 2008.... what a weekend!!
Friday night kicked started off with some of use arriving early on
and some of us more later! After some downpour from the weather
gods, we were finally all set up and ready for the next 24 hours of
activities, food and relentless cries for sleep! 0900 seem to come to quickly for my liking but we were all up and ready to go! After helping out the wonderful Mandy Morris and Ann Horsey set-up their activity, we were straight off to the 3G swing. A giant swing constructed of no more than a few poles and some thick rope, you're hurtled through the air. We were swiftly off to wall climbing where a few of us tackled the over hang! The climbing was fun but the day was far but over. We hit the funfair followed by a good ramming session of dodgems! A quick re-fuel of Krispy Krems doughnuts and some fizzy pop and we were off again wandering the site finding any kind of activity to take part in! We found one, the inflatables! We wrestled and fought and some come came out victorious and some came out beaten, but we had fun none the least! We completed the Gilwell Marathon (and despite the team consisting of 3 JST members, still came nowhere) but hey it's the taking part that counts!! The night set in and we completed the Gilwell Gauntlet and Jason Morris came first in the speed climbing session smashing everyone with 38 seconds!! Woo.. go Jason! As the night turned to morning, the faces of the team dropped so another does of food was in order!! Off we traipsed to the cafe where we loaded up on sugar!! Overall the weekend was packed full of fun just like every year!! Thanks to the Gilwell team behind the event and to Nicola for organising it! |

24 is one of those events that no matter wt the weather is doing can
still be a right laugh. Over 500 participants flocked to Gilwell Park on Friday night, for what is dubbed the best weekend of Scouting. Even though it was raining and the mud was up to our ankles we pitched our tent and immediately started relaxing and socialising with friends. They say that you should sleep the Friday night so that you can last the whole 24 hours on Saturday but, if you think sleeping on a filed of over 500 very exited 16 year olds is easy you are so wrong. Never the less some of us managed this task. 24 actually started at 9am on the Saturday, and after the opening ceremony people were cli9mbing over each other to get to all the activities. Although there was 24 hours to do everything, there was just so much it was impossible. |
