What are Explorer Scouts?
Explorer Scouts are young
people, usually aged between 14 and 18 years old. They make up the fourth
Section of the Scouting family.
There are many types of
Explorer Scout Units, some may be linked to your local Scout Group, others
may be based around different activities.
Not all Units meet
each week, because you will often
be out and about at
weekends or in the holidays doing activities.
There will be times
when you will be busy doing other things such as exams, and being an
Explorer Scout will have to fit around these.
As an Explorer Scout, you
will get the chance to work with other Explorer Scouts in your District, not
just your Unit. By doing this, you will get the chance to do many more
activities, not just the ones your Unit organises.
What are Young Leaders?
The Barking & Dagenham Explorers also run the
Young Leaders scheme for all Barking & Dagenham Beaver, Cub and Scout
sections. The B&D YL scheme aims to
help out other Scout groups within the district at the same time as giving
the YL "on the job" training for becoming a leader.
Young Leaders act in the exact same way as
regular leaders do but are aged between 14-18 years old. They
are able to help run evenings and plan events for all three of the Scouting
sections.
At the Young Leaders meeting,
which takes place every 5th week, the Young Leader will train from the YL
Scheme set by the Scouting Association. There are several different modules
that the Young Leaders must complete and this goes towards their leader
training that they do when they turn 18 to become fully pledged leaders.
Young Leaders is a fun and enjoyable way of
doing your leader training because you're still able to be some what
involved in games and events rather than just supervising.
How do I get a YL
placement?
Do I have to be a Young
Leader?
Your best bet is to speak to your own Scout
group to see if the Beaver or Cub sections need any help.
If your not form a Scout group, or help
there is not needed then the Explorer Leaders will try and allocate you
a placement.
No, you do not have to be a Young Leaders,
it is completely optional. However, to be a Young Leader, you do have to
be a member of the Explorer section.

Junior Service Team
The Junior Service Team (JST) acts in the exact way as
the regular service team on a campsite but is aimed at people aged between 14-18! The JST
provide a volunteer service for Gilwell Park Scout Activity Centre and
assist in the general maintenance of the campsite and assist in the
running of several major events such as Cub and Beaver Fundays and working weekends!
