District Chess Competition - Feb 3 - 17th B&D HQ

This years competition saw 8 scouts from 5 different troops in a very closely fought battle. The competition was exceptionally close and the standard was very high. Almost every game hang in the balance and hard decisions had to be taken by the judges. In the end there was very little separating those that attended...any one of them could have won the competition. Not only was the technical standard high but the show of sportsmanship and ‘scouting spirit’ stood out too. Thanks to the 17th for hosting the event and keeping us ‘refreshed’, to the judges who had a very difficult job, to the leaders and parents who helped out and most importantly of all to the Scouts who made the competition run so well.

Swimming Gala - Feb 10 - Dagenham Swimming Pool

Scouts from 8 troops swam in this years Gala. Points were awarded for top three placings in the three main events, Breaststroke, Backstroke and Freestyle as well as the Team Relay of 4 x 1 lengths. Well done to the 17th on their achievement.

Mark Sutton Competition - Feb 24 - 17th B&D HQ

5 patrols from 6 different troops really helped to 'make' the event this year. After an Inspection they were tested on their skills at Map & Compass, First Aid, Knotting and Cooking. During their 'spare time' they racked their brains trying to complete the Quiz which would also count towards their overall score. With each base marked out of 20 the winners did an excellent job in scoring over 90 points in total. Well done to the 16th B&D.

Founders Day - Feb 25 - 6th B&D Church

Founders Day this year was a very enjoyable day out. Kept short and sweet the organisers (6th B&D) did an excellent job of keeping the attention of the young people. Special mention goes to the 'Walking' song complete with actions and the 'Conga' song as we all exited the hall in one big conga line!

District Handcraft Competition - Mar 10 - 21st B&D HQ

The Scout Handcraft Competition saw some strong entries, its a pity that there were not more exhibits. Few troops entered the competition and the number of entries was poor in places. However those exhibits that did find their way onto the table were excellent. Thanks to all those that entered and supported the competition, and to those who turned up on the Saturday to view the exhibits and to 'cheer on' those who gained a certificate.

Scout Rally - May 12 - Thriftwood

This years Scout Rally was held at Thriftwood (a last minute change due to Crow Camp being booked) on a glorious sunny day (makes a change!) and saw 5 Patrols from 5 Groups enter. Patrols were marked out of 20 on 5 'bases':

Inspection, Pioneering, Tent pitching, Firelighting and Orienteering

Each patrol worked hard throughout the day and seemed to thoroughly enjoy themselves, as well as picking up a few hints and tips. Thanks to all who supported the competition and to all the leaders for their hard work.

Incident Hike - 7 July - Thriftwood

The hike consisted of 6 bases on a circular route 7.5 miles in length. Each base had an 'incident' to complete: Build the carburetor, stack the sugar cubes, first aid test, water pistol alley, lift the bucket. In addition the team would receive one item at each base which they then had to carry round. If they managed to finish they would have enough items to cook an egg on a tin can.

Teams were marked on two separate categories, each with their own trophy...time for completion and their scores on the incidents.

Apart from a few 'wrong turns' most of the teams found their way round the course eventually with a little help. Spirits were high in general.

1st Place - 16th Ravens
2nd Place - 16th Eagles
3rd Place - 9th Wolves
4th Place - 10th/18th

Special mention to the winning team from the 16th...they knew exactly what they were doing and breezed round the course with ease.

Thanks to all the leaders who helped organise the hike and who manned the route on the day.

Camping Competition - 29/30 September 2001 - Thriftwood

This year saw the introduction of a two tier competition...the Len Bridge Challenge Trophy for the novice section and the St. Georges Competition for the more experienced patrols. We had 3 patrols enter the Len Bridge Challenge Trophy from the 1st, 9th and 17th.

All 3 patrols worked hard throughout the weekend and improved and improvised with the assistance of the leaders. Each patrol had made progress and picked up the odd tip or two although they certainly started out with some of the skills from day one.

In the end it was far too close to call and the leaders decided that all 3 patrols had achieved a lot throughout the competition and had passed the Challenge. The 3 patrols will share the trophy throughout the next year.

Cyclo Cross - 1 December - Crow Camp

This year saw 17 Scouts whizzing round the course at Crow Camp. Lance and Steve kindly organised the transport, no mean feat for that amount of bikes. Split into 3 sections each section had two races to determine who would go through to the final. After the official races a general 'up and down the hills' resulted along with a couple of 'grudge matches'.

In the end I believe an enjoyable day was had by all. The final placings were:

1st Marc Tindall (16th B&D)
2nd John Millgate (16th B&D)
3rd Mark Fredrekson (16th B&D)
