Mark Sutton Competition - 26 January - 10th/18th HQ This competition tests the skills of the patrol in the following categories : Inspection, First Aid, Map & Compass, Knots, Cooking and a Quiz. This year saw some 8 patrols enter from 7 groups. Standards were quite high in general although perhaps there a few things every patrol could do with brushing-up on (Map & Compass springs to mind!) The overall results were : 1st - 16th B&D Thanks to all the leaders who helped on the day, the 10th/18th for their hospitality and help, the DC for being a casualty and of course thanks to all the Scouts. Darren Dowling (DSL) Organiser - Peter
Gentry Chess Competition - 3 February - 17th HQ This years competition was quite close . Not only was the technical standard high but the show of sportsmanship and ‘scouting spirit’ stood out too. The two highest scoring Scouts from each league went on to a ‘final’ league where the best played the best. Thanks to the 17th for hosting the event and keeping us ‘refreshed’, to the judges who had a very difficult job, to the leaders who helped out and most importantly of all to the Scouts who made the competition run so well. Dowling (DSL) Sponsored & Fun Swim - 9 February - Dagenham Swimming Pool [Awaiting Report] Author (Appointment) Founders Day - 24 February - Barking Methodist Church [Awaiting Report] Author (Appointment) cRaft Rally Weekend - 13/14 April - Thriftwood This was a new combined event to replace the Handcraft competition for Scouts. Saturday involved 7 Patrols from 4 groups setup camp at Thriftwood to prepare for an afternoon of raft building on the lake. Each Patrol worked on a raft to the same specifications and raced them, one at a time, around the island and back in the quickest possible time. Only 1 of the rafts 'did a Titanic' and some of them looked rather sturdy! After something to eat and a spot of circus skills at the tuck shop the Scouts played a wide game organised by Bosun from the 16th. They certainly seemed to enjoy it although perhaps they need to learn to venture out into the dark a bit more! After breakfast on Sunday morning the Scout Rally competion was held with the patrols rotating around the firelighting, pioneering (flagpole) and orienteering bases. Tent pitching was judged on the previous days efforts and the subsequent striking at the end of the day. All in all an enjoyable weekend...many thanks to the leaders who stayed to help out over the weekend. Darren Dowling (DSL) Organiser - Peter
Gentry St. George's Day - 28 April - St. George's Church [Awaiting Report] Author (Appointment) Activity Day - 4 May - Stubbers Another first-time activity for this year. A day to Stubbers Outdoor Activity Centre was organised to include four sets of activities: sailing, canoeing, tunnelling and climbing. Each activity lasted a good hour and a half with professional instructors from the centre (i.e. the leaders could sit back and relax!). Over 30 Scouts from 5 troops enjoyed a brilliant day out...surprisingly few dinghies were 'tipped' over, only a couple of leaders got stuck in the tunnels, the canoes were nice and stable and I believe everyone went up (and down!) the wall... Darren Dowling (DSL) Organiser - Peter
Gentry Incident Hike - 11 May - Crow Camp 6 Patrols from 5 groups walked a 7.5 mile course around Crow Camp...the weather held off nicely and no patrol got lost (well...we found them all eventually anyway)...There were 4 bases spaced around the circular route... Timed Hike - 16th Falcons Incidents Darren Dowling (DSL) Organiser - Peter
